ABC Chef Competition Launch

ABC Chef Competition Launch

Every year we hold a themed chef competition to celebrate the fantastic culinary skills of our Busy Bees chef's!

This year the theme of our competition is to create a dish that is Allergy Friendly, Busy Bees Friendly and Child Friendly (ABC). Our chef's have been tasked with creating a starter, main or desert, that does not include any of the 13 named allergens.

We understand how dangerous allergens can be and operate strict policies and practises in all of our nursery kitchens to ensure that children are as safe as possible during meal times. Children with allergens are something that our chef's encounter and have to deal with every day, as we provide food for all children and cater to their individual dietary requirements. We feel that is it time to embrace these allergens, rather than cater just for those with intolerances, we want to create a dish that can be enjoyed by everyone.

The 13 most common allergens, which are also the ones most commonly found in our nurseries, are:

  • Gluten - G
  • Shell Fish
  • Egg
  • Fish
  • Nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Soya
  • Dairy
  • Celery
  • Mustard
  • Sesame
  • Sulphites - SU
  • Lupin - LU

Our chef's around the country will be out to create a unique dish that does not contain any of these allergens, that adheres to our Busy Bees vision of eating healthily, and something that can be enjoyed by children aged 0-5 years.

There will be three rounds; the first round is taking place this month (February), with each chef's creation being judged by the Regional Director. Chef's who make it through to round 2, will present the same dish to be judged by the Regional Director and Catering Manager. Once the finalists have been decided, the grand final will take place during National Allergen Week in April. The winning dish will be included in our seasonal menus and be made available to children in all of our nurseries.

We will be posting updates about our ABC competition to our Twitter and Facebook pages, so keep an eye out for more information soon!
