Busy Bees celebrate winning the National Seafood Awards 2009

Busy Bees and Leapfrog Day Nurseries joined Asda, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose as fellow winners at a National Seafood awards ceremony.

Busy Bees are celebrating after winning the ‘Encouraging Children to Eat Seafood’ category at the National Seafood Awards, hosted by Seafish, an authority on seafood.

The award winners were announced last week at the Seafood Awards Ceremony 2009, a black tie gala evening held at The Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London. The night included fine food, entertainment and the award presentations themselves, hosted by Welsh comedian and TV personality Rhod Gilbert. Busy Bees were up against some strong competition, including Manchester City Council, Brakes and Billingsgate Seafood Training School.

Busy Bees Nurseries won the ‘Encouraging Children to Eat Seafood’ award, following a ‘Seafood Project’ held last year, which involved nursery visits from seafood chef and child nutritionist, Ady Delaney. The topic of fish was introduced into all areas of the Busy Bees curriculum, and the children were able to cook with a variety of fish, as well as make sushi and develop role play areas themed around fish.

The Busy Bees Group is committed to healthy eating, partnering up with celebrity chef Phil Vickery in 2008. The Michelin-starred chef, who is a regular on the BBC's Ready Steady Cook, was part of a major national healthy eating campaign by Busy Bees to improve healthy eating among young children. As part of the campaign, Phil worked with the nurseries’ catering teams and an expert on child nutrition, to devise a healthy new menu for the nurseries.

Operations Director, Marg Randles, said, “We are very proud to have won this award, especially considering the fierce competition we faced. All the nurseries have worked very hard over the last year to implement the ‘Seafood Project’, so it was great to see all their hard work recognised.”

Busy Bees Nurseries have always elevated the importance of healthy eating, which is reflected in the nutritious meals the nurseries provide. We will continue in our commitment to provide healthy food to the children at Busy Bees.”
