Growing sunflowers
They started by growing cress which grew so well the children helped to make sandwiches for tea and used the cress they had grown. They are now growing runner beans in the garden and have planted sunflowers too.
The children loved learning about the conditions the seeds need to grow and carried out an experiment to aid their learning. Some seeds were put on the window sill in sunlight and watered, others were put in a dark cupboard. The children love watching the seeds to see what happened and which ones grew.
Growing the sunflowers has enabled the children to talk about height and to use concepts such as 'shorter than' and 'taller than' as they measure the flowers to see how tall they have grown. Children are also learning about numeracy as they look at numbers on the measuring stick.
