nursery children shelling peas that have been grown on their allotmentAt Lilliputs nursery in Preston the children at the holiday club have been outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

The children love going into the nursery allotment and do so on a daily basis.

The children from our holiday club have helped to plant the vegetables and also flowers back in Easter holidays.

Pre school children also visit the allotment on a daily basis and often our cook goes with them to help pick some fresh home grown vegetables which they then take back inside the nursery to be used in their dinners!!!

The children at nursery benefit a great deal from the allotment.  They are aware of the whole process from planting right the way through to preparing and cooking the produce and also learn about what is needed to ensure the plants grow well and flourish.

Of course a little sunshine and fresh air is also good for the children, and we find that the whole activity helps to promote a more healthy lifestyle.

The children also get an appreciation of  where some more common and  well known foods come from, and how they look still attached to the plant.

We also find that there is a certain satisfaction for the children in picking the vegetables and then being able to eat them and it often encourages them to try tasting foods they may otherwise have had less of an interest in.
