Ofsted Recommendations
No Action Points from inspection 2 points of recommendation What steps need to be taken to improve provision further To further improve the early years provision the registered person should : • Develop a continual culture of reflective practice, self evaluation and informed discussion to identify the setting’s strengths and priorities for development that will improve the quality of the provision for all children: with particular regard to the quality of teaching and learning in the room used by children aged two to three years • Develop a systematic and routine approach to using observation and assessment to plan the next steps in a child’s developmental progress in order to ensure that all children experience a challenging programme of learning and development: with particular regard to the room used by children aged two to three years. To ensure these recommendations were carried out immediately, Leanne Martin (Deputy) was drafted in from the under 2’s area to support staff. She created detailed action plans for toddler staff and enforced the team to work to standard (including relief staff). She will review these for progress and will take any required actions highlighted. Beth Hollywood (Pre-School Base room Manager) has now taken over full time in the toddler area and is a strong leader who is not afraid to direct staff whenever required. She is also overseeing all aspects of planning right through to evaluation, including fully monitoring self evaluation. The whole toddler area has been reviewed and the area has been opened up, as we have previously suggested. All the children have been put onto 1 register and are considered a 28 place area rather than 16 places in Snowdrops and 12 places in Bluebells. The computer, book area, role play area, rugs and table top activities are currently in the larger room and the sand, water, playdough & messy craft activities are to be found in the smaller room. The children and staff will be free flowing around the whole toddlers area. The look of the area has been improved immediately by these changes and we will review them to gauge their success. The Toddler area have implemented an early morning meeting and re-introduced a communications book to ensure that information is available for all staff to read/sign understanding. At our full staff meeting we revisited key Person folder layout and responsibilities, ensuring that all folders and Learning Journals are laid out in the same way, thus ensuring that if staff are required to cover in other areas they are taking part in the meetings, reading/signing the communication book, referring to the planning and being familiar with the key person information structure. Base Room Manager’s will continue to oversee that all folders are up to date. Future staff meetings agenda items will still include evaluating our provision and the children’s care within our nursery, but specifically, the toddler area. This will help us with the reflective practice highlighted as recommended.
