Why You Will Love Our Nursery

Port Hamilton nursery is an international nursery situated in the heart of the city where unique people from all over the world make you and your little one feel special.

We are the only nursery in the financial district with Care Inspectorate grades five across the board.

Our 90 place nursery has been open since 2001 and is a very bright open planned nursery with a large secure garden with a grass and soft ground area.

The ground floor comprises of the Baby room which accommodates babies from 6 weeks to 18 months and the Tweenies room, for children from 18 months to 2 years 6 months of age. The 1st floor comprises of the Toddler room which accommodates children from 2 year 6months  to 3 years of age and the Preschool room for children from 3 to 5 years of age.

Each room is very well equipped with a variety of toys made from natural materials (heuristic), sensory areas, black and white areas, lilac relaxation areas, art areas which facilitate sand and water play, an IT area with a touch screen computer, scanner and printer.

We have parking facilities, indoor buggy storage, and direct access into the garden from the ground floor. We have a kitchen and dining area, and our chef prepares and cooks delicious fresh food on a daily basis in our nursery kitchen. Our menu is specially designed by a qualified nutritionist and we provide a variety of food with alternatives to suit every age group and special dietary, cultural and religious requirements.

All staff are fully qualified as childcare practitioners, police checked and SSSC (Scottish Social Services Council) registered. Our fantastic preschool room manager is a qualified teacher. The manager is qualified to a degree level.

Why are we different to any other nursery:

We are different because we enhance all age group through Busy Bees babble to chatter, supporting communication and language.

Busy babies, this is based on the research of Maria Robinson which suggests using high contrasting tones, such as black and white to stimulate the babies brains. Bold geometrical images can hold their interest and help them to focus, and areas rich in quality displays promote babies visual and physical development.

Talk time baskets are  designed for our under two's. This is a set of three baskets with high quality resources in them for children to enjoy engaging in play and learning.

Chatter boxes, are used within the pre-school room. The chatter box approach provides each child with an individual space within the nursery and is an ideal approach to sharing links with home.

Wake and shake, written and recorded by Busy Bees staff 'wake and shake' is exclusive to Busy Bees. This enhancement engages children as they discover a series of dance movements carried out to lively music with their peers. Research has shown that our brain works best when supplied with oxygen and endorphins both which are produced through exercise.

This is only some of the projects we provide that makes us different.

Meet the Team

Bernadette McLean

Nursery Manager

Hi, my name is Bernadette Mclean

I started as the new manager at Port Hamilton on 1st December 2014. I have been in childcare for over 16 years. In that time I have worked in various settings working my way up to manager in 2006. I have an H.N.C. qualification in Childcare and Education and I'm presently in the 4th year of my Childhood Practise Award Degree. I am also a qualified paediatric first aider, first aider at work and possess level 4 Leading in Child Protection and basic food hygiene qualifications.

I am a mum of two, I have a daughter of 24 and a son of 21 years of age. Being a mum is my biggest achievement out of work. Being a mum is the best experience I can share with you through all the knowledge and experience I have gained through the years.

I am here to offer help, care and support to all staff and parents but most importantly to your children.

I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone, so please pop your head in and say hello. My door is always open.

Our aims are:

For every child to have the opportunity to experience a broad and balanced curriculum through activities which are suited to their needs and interests.
To encourage learners to recognise and achieve their potential through the identification of success.
To provide exciting and relevant learning experiences so that children can enjoy their education and develop a life long love of learning.
To ensure that we provide an environment which is safe, welcoming and caring for all our children and families.
To ensure that our children, families and staff members feel valued, supported and respected.
To continue improving the quality of our children’s experiences and learning through an effective programme of continuous staff development.
To ensure that all children have the opportunity to realise their full potential regardless of gender, race, religion or ability through a programme which will support their individual needs.
For our children to have an understanding of the world around them and their place within it.
The Port Hamilton team are dedicated to improving and developing their own knowledge and understanding of childcare and development by regularly attending internal training and external training.

We aim everyday for all our children to have a fun learning experience through play in a safe and stimulating environment whilst receiving a very high standard of care. This ensures all children will become happy, caring and confident individuals.

Through good practise we follow local and national legislation such as National Care Standards, SSSC Codes of Practise, Curriculum for Excellence & Pre Birth to Three, Child at the Centre, GIRFEC and Building the Ambition.

Gillian Easton
Assistant Manager

Hi my name is Gillian. I am the newly appointed deputy manager of the nursery. This role is something I have been working towards for a long time. I am really looking forward to the challenge that my new role will give me.
I will be splitting my time between the office supporting my manager and in the play rooms supporting the children and the staff.
I qualified as a nursery nurse in June 1992. I have over 20 years experience and have worked for Busy Bees for the last 4 years. In this time I have gained lots of knowledge and understanding of child development. The best thing about my job is seeing the smiles on the children's faces everyday through achievements and enjoyments of the experiential activities we provide for them.
