Our preschool children had a great time learning how seeds grow by sowing them into soil and watering them.
Firstly, the children planned their activity by collecting what they would need such as a spade, watering can, plant pots and seeds of course. This supported their Communication and Language and also their Literacy skills understanding that text has meaning and ascribing meaning to their marks too.
Secondly, the children set about preparing the soil for the seeds developing their physical skills in the Moving and Handling aspect of the Early Years Foundation Stage. They were able to use one handed tools to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Finally, the children used fine manipulative movements to sprinkle seeds into the soil beds they had prepared and watered them.
Children learned how water and sunshine will help the seeds to grow taller in to flowers and plants, supporting the Understanding of the World aspect.
Now we just have to wait for them to grow!
