Splish Splash Water Play


Our Activity

In Owls Room (1-2 years), Gemma and Barbara decided to get out the water tray and allow the children to get creative. They filled up the water try with warm water and added some colourful paint. Adding the paint made the water brighter and more appealing to the children, it also made the activity look much more fun! Sea animals were also added to the water, as well as soap to create bubbles. Saphari's face lit up when she saw the water tray being placed on the table, she run over to the aprons and grabbed one as quickly as she could. She took the apron over to Gemma and prompted her to put it on. Once Saphari had the apron on, she stuck her hands in the water. Other children showed excitement watching her and gradually began joining in. Callum picked up a sea animal and splashed it in and out of the water, he then picked up another sea animal and passed it to his peer, showing strong sharing skills. Vinnie struggled to reach the tray so Gemma picked him up and sat him on the table so he could access the water better. Once on the table, Vinnie put his head in the water and laughed as it dripped from his face. When his peers saw him do this, they also stuck their heads into the water and all found it very amusing. All of the children were communicating with each other and sharing their feelings towards the activity which supports their Personal Social Emotional Development. Physical development was also enhanced as they are using their arms to splash the water and to pick up the sea animals.


Why is water play important?

  • It develops motor skills. Water play gives many opportunities to develop fine and gross motor skills. Children will increase their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination through actions like pouring, squirting, stirring and squeezing.
  • Problem Solving Skills. Water play allows children to explore a substance and make discoveries about it. Observing a branch or paper float or sink will teach them, in a very practical way, how and why things happen.
  • Language Development- Imagine the number of new words they will learn whilst having fun in the water and having conversations about it.
  • Social- emotional growth. Water play released energy, it can be both invigorating or relaxing and calming for young children.


Water Activities to try at home

Float or sink- Fill up a container with water and pick a few objects. Let your child put them in the water and they can guess if there going to float or sink.

Washing Babies- Add some soap to water and throw some babies in there. Let your child wash the babies as part of a role play experience.

Colour Changing- Add some dye to your water and watch as the colour changes (food colouring can be used)
