Preparing an Early Approach to Literacy (PEAL)
Preparing an Early Approach to Literacy is carried out with children the term before they leave the setting to go to school. It raises awareness and confidence within the children, particularly around the use of language and speaking amongst peers. The enhancement supports children in the development of pre-reading behaviours such as holding a book correctly, turning pages, understanding that a story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Throughout small group sessions with their key person the children will learn about characters within a story and use their imagination and developing skills of prediction and recall to work out ‘what might happen next’ and create their own stories.
