Busy Bees Nursery at Colchester, where children are ‘abundantly happy’ and ‘cared for’ in a safe and nurturing environment, has been praised by Ofsted in its latest inspection.

Achieving an ‘Strong Standard’ across all areas, the nursery team was recognised for building ‘exceedingly warm, trusting relationships’ where children feel ‘emotionally safe’ and develop as ‘sense of belonging’.

Located on Pheonix Square at Severalls Industrial Estate, inspectors highlighted the team’s ‘nurturing’ attachments across all rooms, providing comfort and emotional security. Babies settle quickly with calm predictable routines, while the older children engage in extended conversations to support their confidence and readiness for school.

The nursery is led by Kate Whitnell, who brings over 23 years of experience, alongside a longstanding team with more than 200 years of combined service, providing trusted high-quality care for families in the community.

Kate Whitnell, Centre Director at Busy Bees at Colchester, said: “We are over the moon to be celebrating our Strong Standard across all areas. This result reflects the commitment of our long-standing team who believe in giving every child the best start in life in an inclusive environment where they can grow in confidence and independence.”

Ofsted also applauded the nursery for placing a strong emphasis on wellbeing, with children developing ‘a secure understanding of health, self-care and physical wellbeing’, with staff using daily routines to promote healthy choices such as nutritious food and physical activity. In addition, children learn to ‘express and manage their emotions effectively’ and show ‘an abundance of resilience, confidence and positive social interaction.’

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities ‘thrive and make wonderful progress’, with staff supporting their learning through consistent key person support and visual communication strategies. As a result, children develop ‘substantially in independence, confidence and engagement with others’.

Families said they ‘feel welcomed and listened to’, with the nursery team working alongside parents to ensure consistency of care between home and nursery, including supporting sleeping, feeding and weaning routines.

A parent whose son attends the nursery, said: “We couldn't be happier with Busy Bees Colchester. The staff are truly amazing - so kind, caring, and supportive. Our son has additional needs, and the nursery has been incredible in the way they've supported him. Their understanding, patience, and genuine care have meant so much to us during what could have been a very overwhelming time. We feel very lucky to have found such a nurturing and supportive environment.”

The nursery’s Bee Curious curriculum was recognised for offering ‘clear progression from babies to children preparing for school’, with a clear focus on communication and language development. The staff were commended for providing an ‘ambitious’ curriculum that is purposeful, well-designed and adapted to all children.
