Introducing your child to the world of potty training is a significant milestone for both parents and toddlers. Recognising the signs of readiness can make this transition much smoother.
With more than 40 years of providing childcare to little ones, we know a thing or two about the transition from getting little bottoms from nappies to potties!
In this guide, we’ll delve into the key indicators and offer expert advice to help you determine if your child is ready for potty or toilet training!
It’s important to remember that every child is different and will hit developmental milestones, such as potty training, at different points. The important thing is that you’re doing it at the right time for your child and your family.
When it comes to knowing whether your child is ready for potty training, keep an eye out for the following signs:
Independence for dressing and undressing
Becoming more curious about the toilet
More than an hour of dryness between nappy changes
They can express to you when they've been for a wee or poo
Milestones
Your child’s developmental journey is unique, but there are some general milestones that indicate signs a child is ready for potty training. These can include improved motor skills for climbing onto the potty or toilet, and the increased ability to be able to communicate their needs with you.
Observing Behaviour
Paying close attention to your child’s behaviour for additional cues can help in knowing your child might be getting close to potty training. For example, if they begin displaying an interest in adult or sibling behaviour in the bathroom, or if they’re able to communicate when they need to or have been for a poo or a wee.
It’s totally normal to have concerns around potty training readiness, and It’s okay if your child isn’t ready at the same age as their peers. Being patient and supportive if your child isn’t yet ready is really important.
If you’ve attempted potty training and it hasn’t clicked yet, don’t worry! Every child is unique - just continue to offer positive reinforcement and encouragement when they do show signs that they’re ready for potty training.
Potty training can be a long and messy milestone for you and your child but try and equip yourself with practical tips to make the experience a positive one.
Make a start by popping out and getting all the essentials ahead of starting potty training, such as:
a potty if you are choosing to use one, or a children’s toilet training seat for the toilet
lots of comfortable pants
plenty of spare trouser bottoms or other easy-to-manage clothing. Trousers with elasticated waistbands make it easy when quick changes are needed.
Spare socks (accidents can go further than just trousers, so it’s best to be prepared with spare socks!)
baby wipes
some cleaning equipment for any little accidents!
