Whether you're making the most of the sunny weather by planning a road trip or catching a flight further afield, travelling with young children can sometimes feel a little bit daunting. With some planning (and lots of snacks), adventures with babies and toddlers can be enjoyable and memorable for the whole family.
At Busy Bees, we understand the needs of young children and have curated a list of top tips for a smooth journey this Summer.
1. Time It Right
Try to plan your departure around nap times. Many parents find that setting off just before a nap can result in a peaceful start to the journey. If you're travelling with more than one child, consider their sleep schedules to minimise disruptions.
2. Comfort is Key
Ensure your child’s car seat is well-fitted and their clothing is soft and breathable. Layering is helpful in case the temperature changes. Don’t forget a sunshade for the window and a blanket for cosy naps.
3. Snack Smart
Pack plenty of healthy, easy-to-eat snacks. For toddlers, think rice cakes, fruit slices, or mini sandwiches. For younger babies, prepare bottles or breastfeed during breaks. Always pull over safely for feeding.
4. Bring a Busy Bag
Create a travel kit with books, soft toys, colouring sheets, and a few new surprises. Rotating toys during the journey can keep your little one engaged and reduce restlessness.
5. Plan Regular Breaks
Frequent stops give everyone a chance to stretch, change nappies, and reset. Look for child-friendly rest areas with green space or a small play zone if possible.
1. Book Smart
Choose flight times that align with your child’s natural routine. Morning flights tend to be calmer and less delayed. If you can, try to choose a direct flight – this will remove the added stress of a layover.
2. Pack Light
In your hand luggage, include nappies, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, and comfort items like a blanket, or favourite cuddly toy. For babies, don’t forget formula or expressed milk if needed, airlines are usually very supportive and allow for these important extra liquids.
Top Tip: Pack a change of clothes for yourself too! Travelling can sometimes get messy – it’s always best to be prepared.
3. Ears and Air Pressure
Take-off and landing can cause ear discomfort. Encourage sucking during these times—offer a bottle, dummy, or breastfeed your baby. Toddlers can sip water or chew a small snack.
4. Screen Time with Purpose
A downloaded episode of their favourite show or a toddler-friendly app can be a great backup. Don't rely solely on screens, but they can offer much-needed downtime when all else fails.
5. Stay Calm and Accept Help
Airports and planes can be overstimulating. Keep routines where possible, and don’t be afraid to accept help from airline staff or fellow passengers. Most people are understanding when they see a parent doing their best!
Travelling with young children might take a little extra preparation, but it also offers wonderful opportunities for bonding and memory-making. Whether you're exploring new places by car or jetting off on a family holiday, each journey is a chance to see the world through your child's eyes—full of wonder and discovery.
At Busy Bees, we know that the early years are the most important ones. Safe travels from all of us, and don’t forget to enjoy the ride!
